In a grand ceremony held at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Port Harcourt on Wednesday, His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Joseph Fubara GSSRS, Executive Governor Rivers State presented cash gifts totaling over N160 million to Rivers athletes who excelled in various national and international tournaments.
Governor Fubara emphasized that the rewards were not just about the monetary value but a gesture of encouragement for the athletes' dedication and passion for the state. He praised their achievements, stating that it was a testament to the state's investment in sports development.
The governor awarded the following cash gifts:
- Rivers United FC under 17 players: N30 million
- Rivers Hoopers Basketball: N25 million
- Rivers Angels FC: N25 million
- Rivers Beach Volleyball team: N10 million
- Hockey team: N10 million
- Table Tennis team: N5 million
- Judo team: N3 million
- Chess team: N5 million
- Volleyball team: N10 million
- Paralympics team: N10 million
- Cycling team: N5 million
- Supporters Club: N20 million
- Individual trophy winners: N2.5 million each
Governor Fubara directed the Commissioner for Sports, Barr. Christopher Green, to organize a sports festival that will climax in December to celebrate the athletes' achievements and encourage youths to pursue their potential in sports.
Earlier, Barr. Green commended Governor Fubara for his support, highlighting the athletes' impressive performances and numerous trophies won. He listed the achievements of various teams, including:
- Beach Volleyball team: Winners of the National Beach Volleyball Championship
- Hockey team: Winners of the National Hockey Championship
- Table Tennis team: Winners of the National Table Tennis Championship
- Rivers United under 17 team: Winners of the National Youth Under 17 Football League
- Seiyefa Jackson: Highest goal scorer in the National Youth Under 17 Football League
- Oscar Ozornwanfor: Most valuable player in the National Youth Under 17 Football League
- 5 players enlisted in the Nigeria Golden Eaglet team
- 7 players upgraded into the Rivers United Football Club
- Rivers Angels: First runner-up in the Nigeria Female Premier League and winner of the Presidential cup
- Rivers Hoopers Basketball: Winners of the National Basketball Championship and recipients of $50,000 USD from the organizers.
The ceremony was a celebration of excellence and a testament to the state's commitment to sports development.
