In a significant decision, the Club Owners Association of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has resolved to adopt a full league season format of 38 matches for the upcoming 2024/25 season. This decision was reached during the Club Owners' Annual General Meeting (AGM) today, putting to rest earlier fears of a truncated season due to economic constraints.
"I want to express appreciation to the board of the NPFL for a job well done. I also want to appreciate GTI for their support," said NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau. "But the NPFL should do more to attract sponsors to bring more money into the league. When more money comes in, the clubs will also have more money.
"The issue of our players running away from the league must stop. If the clubs get more money to pay the players very well, they won’t run to go and play in any African country. They will stop moving away, going to play in Sudan or Tanzania. When there is more money for the clubs, it will stop the players from even running to Benin Republic."
Gusau emphasized the need for improved remuneration for players, saying, "Let us holistically look at where we were and where we are now and where the NFF can come in to support you to improve. We shall do our best to continue to improve on the standard of the league."
He also stressed the importance of maintaining a consistent fixture schedule, saying, "We must keep to the fixtures from the beginning to the end of the season. When drawing up the fixtures, you must take into consideration other competitions like the Federation Cup. With your cooperation, we would achieve this. By the grace of God, we would make a lot of changes."
