HANDBALL
The 2024 National Division One Handball League commenced on Monday, July 15, at the Multipurpose Sports Hall of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, with a thrilling opening day that saw Aidia Academy, Desert Warriors, and Mind Scope Academy record victories in their respective matches.
The male category saw COAS Shooters edge out Bendel Dynamos 22-21 in a closely contested match, while Mind Scope Academy defeated Osun 19-15. Aidia Academy triumphed 22-21 over Cherubim & Seraphim Academy, and Desert Warriors dominated Omo-Ogiefo 18-13 in the female category.
Abia Valiant secured a 20-17 win over Police Machine, and Funad humbled Gboko Dream 14-12 in the male category. Ekiti lost 21-22 to Omo-Ogifo, and Bayelsa surrendered 17-19 to Osun in the female category.
The league's opening day lived up to its hype, with handball enthusiasts and fans turning out in large numbers to cheer on their teams. The beautiful skills displayed by the players kept spectators entertained throughout the day.
Action continues on Tuesday, July 16, with several matches lined up for the day. All participating teams and officials had arrived at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Sunday, July 14, for accreditation and clearance, paving the way for a smooth start to the tournament.
