Nigeria's Falconets earned a hard-fought 1-0 win against Korea Republic in their opening match at the 11th FIFA U20 Women's World Cup finals in Bogota, Colombia. Flourish Sabastine's late goal in the second half sealed the victory for the Nigerian team at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo.
The match saw few scoring opportunities, but Nigeria's Mary Lucky Mkpa had two clear chances to score, which she unfortunately missed. Korea Republic came close to taking the lead in the 15th minute, but Shukurat Oladipo's timely intervention prevented the goal.
In the second half, Nigeria's Sabastine and Amina Bello had their shots blocked, while substitute Chiamaka Okwuchukwu made a promising run on the right wing. Sabastine eventually scored the winning goal, slicing the ball from the right wing to hit the upright and roll into the net.
The Falconets will face their next challenge against three-time champions Germany on Wednesday evening at the same venue.
