The club was established in 2016 following the merger of two Port Harcourt institutions — Sharks FC and Dolphins FC The objective was singular and bold: to consolidate football talent in Rivers State and place the state at the pinnacle of Nigerian football.
What followed was not a gradual rise, but a rapid ascent. Under the stewardship of Barr. Chris Green and the leadership of Chief Dr. Okey Kpalukwu, Rivers United was structured to compete, to dominate, and to represent.
That vision has been realized. Today, Rivers United stands as the No.1 ranked club in Nigeria and the only Nigerian club currently ranked in CAF’s Top 30 clubs in Africa.
CARRYING THE NATION’S FLAG
Beyond domestic success, Rivers United has redefined Nigeria’s presence in African football.
The club’s consistent performances in CAF inter-club competitions over the last 8 years have been instrumental in earning Nigeria the coefficient points required to maintain four representatives on the continent every season.
In an era where Nigerian clubs struggled for continental relevance, Rivers United provided the results, the points, and the credibility that kept the nation’s flag flying high in Africa. That is impact. That is legacy.
DOMESTIC CONSISTENCY: A CLUB BUILT TO LAST
Since their debut season in 2016, Rivers United have never been relegated. They have remained a permanent fixture in the Nigeria Professional Football League top flight — a testament to the club’s stability and ambition.
The breakthrough came in 2021–22, when Rivers United were crowned NPFL Champions with a record-breaking 77 points, the highest in league history at the time. It was the first league title for the merged club, and the first NPFL title for a Rivers-based side since Dolphins won in 2011.
