The 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League season has come to a close, with Rivers United finishing in a respectable 8th position. The team's impressive performance in the CAF Confederation's Cup, reaching the quarterfinals for the second consecutive season, was a highlight of the campaign. 1. Match day one: Rivers United 2-0 Remo Stars (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium PH, 12 October 2023)

We dominated the opening home game of the season, with Alex Oyowah's 14th minute opening goal setting the tone. Andy Okpe's stunning late strike sealed the 2-0 win, securing maximum points for the Pride of Rivers 

2. Match day 2: Niger Tornadoes 1-0 Rivers United (Ahmadu Bello Stadium Kaduna, 8 October 2023)

Rivers United's 2023/2024 NPFL campaign got off to a disappointing start with a 1-0 loss to Niger Tornadoes in Kaduna. Bashir Usman's 6th-minute penalty proved decisive, despite our team's spirited efforts to equalize. 

Deputy Echeta, Nyima Nwagua, Samuel Adom, Sadiq Abubakar, and Alex Oyowah all came close but were denied.

A controversial non-penalty call in the 67th minute added to our frustration. A tough result it was to swallow

3. Match day 3: Rivers United 0-0 Kwara United (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, 15 October 2023)

The Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium witnessed a fiercely contested battle between Rivers United and Kwara United, ending in a 0-0 stalemate. Both teams created chances, but neither could find the breakthrough. 

4. Match day 4: Kano Pillars 1-0 Rivers United ( Sani Abacha Stadium Kano, 22 October 2023)

HEARTBREAK IN KANO!

Rabiu Ali's stoppage-time winner snatched all three points for Kano Pillars against 10-man Rivers United! Anthony Ohaegbu's red card swung the momentum, and despite our valiant efforts, Ali's late strike secured the win for the "Sai Masu Gida". A tough defeat to swallow.

5. Match day 5: Rivers United 1-0 Lobi Stars (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium PH, 29 October 2023)

Oyowah's Header Seals Win for Rivers United Against Lobi Stars!

Alex Oyowah's precision header in the 42nd minute, expertly met from Paul Acquah's free kick, secured a 1-0 victory for Rivers United against Lobi Stars!

Abiodun Akande shone in goal, denying Samuel Tiza's dangerous effort and making another spectacular save in the 63rd minute. Our defense held strong, earning a clean sheet, while late chances for a second goal went begging. A well-deserved win it was for the Pride of Rivers! 

6. Match day 6: Heartland 1-1 Rivers United (Dan Ayaim Stadium Owerri, 1st November 2023)

Farouk Mohammed's stunning first goal of the season secured a hard-fought point against our bitter rivals! Onyekachi Okafor gave Heartland FC the lead, but Farouk's spectacular free kick leveled the scores. 

The second half was intense, with Abiodun Akande making a crucial late save to deny Heartland FC the win. Rivers United countered swiftly, but Andy Okpe's cross was intercepted, leaving Eze Chibuzor frustrated in the box. 

7. Match day 7: Rivers United 1-1 Sunshine Stars (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium PH, 5 November 2023)

Alex Oyowah's last-gasp equalizer salvaged a point for Rivers United against Sunshine Stars! We dominated the first half, but a mix-up at the back gifted Sunshine Stars the lead early in the second half. 

Despite late pressure, it seemed like we'd suffer our first home league defeat of the season. But inspirational captain Nyima Nwagua's introduction turned the tide! In the dying minutes of added time, Oyowah slotted home after a clever touch from Nwagua, securing a thrilling 1-1 draw! 

8. Match day 8: Katsina United 1-0 Rivers United (Muhammad Dikko Stadium Katsina, 11 November 2023)

VALIANT EFFORT GOES UNREWARDED

Despite a dominant first half, Rivers United fell to a 1-0 defeat against Katsina United. Mansoor Saleh's strike early in the second half proved decisive, punishing our inability to capitalize on chances. Samuel Antwi shone bright, creating opportunities, but efforts from Paul Acquah, Andy Okpe, and Kazie Enyinnaya narrowly missed the target. Late substitutes Joseph Onoja and Shedrack Asiegbu showed promise, but we couldn't find the equalizer. A much-improved away performance, but ultimately a frustrating defeat. 

9. Match day 9: Rivers United 2-1 Abia Warriors (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium PH, 20 November 2023)

RIVERS UNITED SHOW STEEL TO SEE OFF ABIA WARRIORS!
Alex Oyowah's first-half penalty and Paul Odeh's deflected cross sealed a hard-fought 2-1 win for Rivers United against Abia Warriors! Ifeanyi Anaemena's late penalty pulled one back for the visitors, but we held on for a thrilling victory! The win did set us up perfectly for our CAF Confederation's Cup group stage opener.

10. Match day 10: Plateau United 3-2 Rivers United (New Jos Township Stadium, 10 January 2024)

Rivers United Suffer Narrow Defeat to Plateau United in Thrilling Clash!

Andy Okpe's penalty gave us an early lead, but Plateau United staged a stunning comeback to win 3-2! The hosts equalized through Albert Hillary's spot kick, then Muhammed Umar and Adams Yakubu struck to seal the victory. Endurance Ebedebiri's penalty briefly drew us level, but Plateau United's resilience paid off. 

11. Match day 11: Rangers 1-0 Rivers United (Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium Enugu, 24 Jan 2024

UNBEATEN RUN CAME TO AN END IN ENUGU!

Rivers United's unbeaten streak of three matches was on track to continue at halftime in Enugu, but Kazwen Ogunleye's stunning free kick early in the second half shattered our dreams! 

The hosts snatched a 1-0 victory, ending our impressive run. Though we left Enugu empty-handed, our spirits remained high! 

12. Match day 12: Rivers United 2-1 Bayelsa United (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium PH, 14 December 2023)

RIVERS UNITED CRUISE PAST BAYELSA UNITED!
Nyima Nwagua and Yao Bernard scored in each half to propel Rivers United to a 2-0 win, moving us up to 12th place in the NPFL! 
Nwagua continued his fine form with a low drive in the 10th minute, while Bernard's sublime header sealed the win five minutes from full time. 

Our dominant performance was marked by a clean sheet, with Alex Oyowah, Augustine Okejepha, and Shedrack Asiegbu controlling the tempo. 

13. Match day 13: Sporting Lagos 1-0 Rivers United (Mobolaji Johnson Arena Onikan, 14 February 2024

SPORTING LAGOS SNAP WINLESS STREAK WITH 1-0 WIN OVER RIVERS UNITED!

The Noisy Lagosians ended their 7-game drought with a crucial victory at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, courtesy of Clement Naantuam's second-half goal.

We did struggle for major part of the game failing to pose much threat to the host. Sporting Lagos secured a vital win to move away from the relegation zone. A much-needed triumph for the Lagos side! 

14. Match day 14: Rivers United 2-0 Enyimba FC (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium PH, 30 January 2024)

RIVERS UNITED RETURN TO WINNING WAYS WITH DOMINANT WIN OVER ENYIMBA FC!

Deputy Echeta's brace led the charge as we clinched a convincing victory over Enyimba FC! We dominated the match, with Echeta scoring in the 12th minute and again just after halftime, following a brilliant pass from Nyima Nwagua. 

Abiodun Akande made three crucial saves to secure a clean sheet. A fantastic team performance that delighted our fans! 

15. Match day 15: Shooting Stars 1-0 Rivers United (Lekan Salami Stadium Ibadan, 10 Feb 2024)

Our trip to the Lekan Salami Stadium ended in defeat as Malomo Taofeek goal from a controversial penalty gave Shooting Stars victory. 

A scrappy game was decided by a scrappier goal, as the Oluyole Warriors captain converted from the spot after a penalty was awarded on the dot of 45 minutes to ultimately take the three points.

It was a frustrating evening for us as we felt undone by that decisive call after having dominated for the major part of the encounter with the best chance falling Deputy Echeta's way but it was blocked for a corner.

16. Match day 16: Rivers United 1-1 Bendel Insurance (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium PH, 28 December 2023)

RIVERS UNITED HELD TO FRUSTRATING DRAW BY BENDEL INSURANCE!

Nyima Nwagua's 38th-minute strike cancelled out Chisom Okereke's early goal, leaving us with a disappointing draw at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium. 

Despite dominating the first half, we struggled to capitalize on our chances. Alex Oyowah and Andy Okpe came close in the second half, but Amas Obasogie's saves denied us the win and a frustrating end to 2023

17. Match day 17: Gombe United 1-1 Rivers United (Pantami Stadium Gombe, 7 January 2024)

RIVERS UNITED EARNS HARD-FOUGHT DRAW AGAINST GOMBE UNITED!

Andy Okpe's clinical finish was cancelled out by Wasiu Alalade's header on the stroke of halftime, ending the match in a 1-1 draw at the Pantami Stadium. Despite dominating the first half, we struggled to capitalize on our chances. 

The second half was intense, with both teams creating opportunities, but our defense held strong. 

18. Match day 18: Rivers United 2-1 Akwa United (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium PH, 16 January 2024)

RIVERS UNITED LEAPFROG TO 5TH WITH GRITTY WIN OVER AKWA UNITED!

Sadiq Abubakar's brace inspired us to a thrilling 2-1 victory, boosting our NPFL standings! Despite a shaky start, we showed resilience and dominated the game, with Samuel Antwi shining bright. 
Abubakar's goals, including a brilliant header, sealed the win. 

Abiodun Akande's crucial save and a strong team performance ensured we took home the points. 

19. Match day 19: Doma United 1-1 Rivers United (Pantami Stadium Gombe, 21 January, 2024)

HEARTBREAK IN GOMBE: Rivers United Denied Win by Stoppage-Time Equalizer

We were left reeling after Abiam Nelson's dramatic overhead kick in stoppage time snatched a 1-1 draw for Doma United at the Pantami Stadium in Gombe. Yao Bernard's exquisite finish had given us the lead in first-half added time, but the hosts' late equalizer denied us a crucial win.

The match saw controversy as Alex Oyowah's goal was disallowed, and despite our dominant defense and promising attacks, we couldn't seal the victory. The draw left us in 14th place with 21 points from 15 matches, a bitter pill to swallow.

20. Match day 20: Rivers United 3-2 Doma United (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium PH, 18 February 2024)

"WHAT. A. GAME! Nyima Nwagua's HAT-TRICK heroics sealed a thrilling 3-2 win for Rivers United against Doma United! 

The Pride of Rivers fought hard to maintain the lead as Bidemi Owoku and Hillary Ekawu scored for the visitors. 

21. Match day 21: Remo Stars 2-1 Rivers United (Remo Stars stadium Ikenne, 6 May 2024)

We suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Remo Stars in a thrilling NPFL matchday 21 fixture. Andy Okpe's expertly taken penalty kick in the 18th minute gave us a promising start, but Remo Stars refused to back down.

The hosts equalized in the 68th minute through Haruna Hadi, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. Despite our best efforts, Franck Mawaena scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute, securing a hard-fought victory for Remo Stars.

Although we leave empty-handed, we took pride in our team's resilience and determination .

We Stormed Back into Top Ten with Thrilling Win!

Rivers United reignited their season with a pulsating 3-2 victory over Niger Tornadoes, catapulting them back into the top ten! Nyima Nwagua, Ekerette Udom, and Adams Abubakar scored in a dominant display, sending the home fans into raptures.

We capitalized on Tornadoes' slow start, with Nyima Nwagua striking first in the 15th minute. Ekerette Udom doubled the lead with a powerful header, before Adams Abubakar's expert free kick sealed the win. A late penalty couldn't dampen our spirits, as we held on for a crucial three points!

The win propelled us to 9th place, while Tornadoes slipped to 12th. The Pride of Rivers is on the rise again!

23. Match day 23: Kwara United 0-0 Rivers United (Kwara State Sports Complex Ilorin, 9 May 2024)

Rivers United and Kwara United played out a thrilling goalless draw in a rescheduled matchday 23 fixture at the Kwara State Sports Complex. Augustine Okejepha was the standout player in a game that saw both teams create chances but fail to find the net. The first half was cautious, with Rivers United's defense, marshaled by Kazie Enyinnaya and Emmanuel Ampiah, keeping the hosts at bay.

The second half was more intense, with Kwara United creating several chances, but our goalkeeper Osagie Onisodumeya and the woodwork came to the rescue. Kazie Enyinnaya's lob-cum-shot hit the crossbar, while Emmanuel Ogbole's effort was clawed away by Onisodumeya. Despite introducing Nyima Nwagua and Mark Gibson, Rivers United couldn't find a winner, and the game ended in a stalemate.

The draw meant we continued our push up the NPFL log, with Augustine Okejepha's performance a highlight. The team's defense was solid, and the goalkeeper's brilliance ensured a share of the spoils. While a win was desired, a point away from home was a valuable addition to their tally. 

24. Match day 24: Rivers United 1-1 Kano Pillars (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium PH, 9 May 2024)

RIVERS UNITED FIGHT BACK TO EARN DESERVED POINT!

Williams Sunday's stunning equalizer secured a 1-1 draw against Kano Pillars at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium. After falling behind, we pushed hard and got our reward in the 65th minute when Sunday's long-range effort found the net.

Chief Coach Evans Ogenyi's tactical changes and the introduction of fresh legs at halftime sparked our comeback. Samuel Antwi's clever touch set up Sunday's goal, and we pushed hard for the winner but Pillars held on.

A valuable point earned, and it was a testament to our team's spirit and determination! 

25. Match day 25: Lobi Stars 3-2 Rivers United (Lafia Township Stadium, 13 March 2024)

NPFL THRILLER: Rivers United Fall 3-2 to Lobi Stars in Lafia Showdown!

In a pulsating encounter at the Lafia Township Stadium, Rivers United pushed Lobi Stars to the limit, but ultimately succumbed 3-2. The match saw Samuel Tiza, Alao Danbani (pen), and Kumaga Suur score for Lobi, while Ukeme Williams and Mark Gibson netted for Rivers United.

The contest was marked by a contentious penalty awarded to Lobi in the 43rd minute, which Kumaga Suur converted to mark a milestone - the 500th goal of the 2023/24 NPFL season!

Despite the setback, Rivers United demonstrated their resolve and fighting spirit, making for a thrilling spectacle that left fans on the edge of their seats. 

26. Match day 26: Rivers United 1-0 Heartland FC (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium PH, 18 March 2024)

Rivers United Claim Hard-Fought 1-0 Win Over Heartland!

Ukeme Williams' moment of magic made the difference as Rivers United edged Heartland FC 1-0! The midfielder's precision strike, courtesy of Yao Bernard's clever setup and Mark Gibson's pinpoint delivery, propelled us to 14th place in the NPFL table with three games in hand. It was a vital win for the Pride of Rivers! 

27. Match day 27: Sunshine Stars 1-0 Rivers United (Ondo Sports Complex Akure, 12 May 2024)

Heartbreak in Ondo: Sunshine Stars Edge Rivers United

A frustrating day in Ondo as Sunshine Stars FC nicked a narrow 1-0 win over Rivers United! Ibrahim Yusuf's solitary strike proved decisive, condemning us to a bitter defeat at the Ondo Sports Complex. Despite our best efforts, we couldn't find an equalizer, leaving us empty-handed. Tough luck.

28. Match day 28: Rivers United 2-0 Katsina United (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium PH, 26 April 2024)

Rivers United March On with 2-0 Win Over Katsina United!

Rivers United continued their impressive streak, defeating Katsina United 2-0 in MD28! Deputy Echeta's 44th-minute strike and Kazie Enyinnaya's 80th-minute goal sealed the win, moving us up to 12th place with 40 points! Three wins in a row since our CAFCC exit, with Plateau United, Rangers, and Katsina United falling to the mighty Pride of Rivers! 

29. Match day 29: Abia Warriors 2-0 Rivers United (Umuahia Township Stadium, 16 May 2024)

The grueling schedule caught up with us as we slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Abia Warriors in a rescheduled matchday 29 encounter played in Umuahia. The hosts capitalized on our fatigue, scoring twice in the second half through Samson Obi and Meme Okike. Despite Samuel Antwi's valiant effort, we struggled to find their rhythm, succumbing to our fourth match in nine days schedule. 

30. Match day 30: Rivers United 3-1 Plateau United (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium PH, 17 April 2024)

Rivers United secured a convincing 3-1 win over Plateau United! Alex Oyowah opened the scoring in the 4th minute, followed by Deputy Echeta's strike in the 40th minute. Ekerette Udom sealed the win in the 70th minute, while Mundi Bernard scored a late consolation goal for Plateau United in the 90+4' minute. It was indeed a dominant display from the Pride of Rivers!

31. Match day 31: Rivers United 2-0 Rangers International (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, 21 April 2024)

Rivers United Stuns League Leaders Rangers with Dominant 2-0 Win!

Rivers United silenced doubters with a resounding 2-0 victory over table-topping Rangers International at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium! We answered questions about our resolve, bouncing back from continental exploits to outclass the league leaders.

Alex Oyowah's 34th-minute header and Deputy Echeta's thunderous finish, courtesy of a brilliant team move, sealed the win. Our backline, led by Sochima Victor and Kazie Enyinnaya, stifled Rangers' threats, while Augustine Okejepha's link-up play created chances. This massive win propels us up two places in the NPFL table!

32. Match day 32: Bayelsa United 2-1 Rivers United (Samson Siasia Sports Complex Yenagoa, 30 April 2024)

Bayelsa United emerged victorious in a thrilling NPFL encounter against Rivers United, winning 2-1 in a matchday 32 fixture played over two days due to adverse weather conditions. The match began on Monday, but was halted after just 7 minutes due to heavy rain and strong winds, with Bayelsa United leading 1-0 through Ekeson Okorie's 4th-minute goal.

The match resumed on Tuesday at 8am, with Rivers United pushing hard for an equalizer. Their efforts paid off in added time when Kazie Enyinnaya's shot was deflected into the net. However, Bayelsa United quickly restored their lead through Abdulrahman Muniru's well-taken goal, securing a hard-fought victory.

33. Match day 33: Rivers United 4-1 Sporting Lagos (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium PH, 26 May 2024)

The Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium witnessed a thrilling display as we trounced Sporting Lagos 4-1 in the NPFL matchday 33 fixture! Samuel Antwi's clever finish in the 26th minute set the tone, while Andy Okpe's brilliant brace (49' and 69') and Seiyefa Jackson's debut goal in the 85th minute sealed the convincing win.

Before the match, Deputy Echeta received his well-deserved LBA April Goal of the Month Award. 

34. Match day 34: Enyimba FC 4-1 Rivers United (Enyimba Stadium Aba, 2 June 2024)

DEBUT DELIGHT TURNS TO DESPAIR: Ochobi Elias' Big Day Ends in Defeat

Ochobi Elias' senior team debut was overshadowed by a disappointing 4-1 loss to Enyimba FC in Aba. Andy Okpe's seventh goal of the season had given us a promising start, but defensive lapses and Enyimba's clinical finishing condemned us to our biggest defeat of the season.

Despite Seiyefa Jackson and Ochobi Elias' efforts, Enyimba's Elijah Akanni bagged a brace, and Chijoke Mbaoma also scored, leaving us in ninth place with 47 points from 34 matches. This defeat did mark Enyimba's first win against us since December 2019, and our first concession of 4 goals since May 2021.

A tough day at the office, but we'll regroup and fight on!

35. Match day 35: Rivers United 1-0 Shooting Stars (Adokiye Amiesimaka PH, 9 June 2024)

Nyima Nwagua Strikes to Sink Shooting Stars!

Nyima Nwagua's 51st-minute tap-in sealed a thrilling 1-0 win for Rivers United against Shooting Stars at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium! The captain's clever finish, set up by Kazie Enyinnaya's pinpoint cross and Mark Gibson Theo's clever exchange, earned us maximum points in our NPFL matchday 35 clash.

A intense first half saw both teams create chances, with Nyima Nwagua, Andy Okpe, and Abba Suleiman going close for us, while Okiemute Odah made crucial saves for 3SC. Abiodun Akande also denied the visitors with brilliant stops.

Our high pressing paid off in the second half, with Nyima Nwagua's winner moving us up to 8th place in the NPFL table with 50 points from 35 matches!

36. Matchday 36: Bendel Insurance 2-1 Rivers United (Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Benin, 12 June 2024)

Late Drama in Benin City: Insurance Edge Rivers United

A thrilling finale to our NPFL matchday 36 clash in Benin City! Shedrack Asiegbu's added-time stunner, set up by Tega Ebetomane, almost completed a stunning comeback. However, Insurance held on for a 2-1 win, courtesy of Chisom Okereke and Divine Nwachukwu's goals.

The result saw us drop to 9th place with 50 points from 36 matches. A tough day.

37. Match day 37: Rivers United 6-0 Gombe United (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium PH, 15 June 2024)

NEW RECORD SET!

We put on a mesmerizing show, outclassing Gombe United 6-0! Seiyefa Jackson stole the spotlight with a brilliant brace, while Shedrack Asiegbu's first-half double set the tone. Kazie Enyinnaya and Nyima Nwagua also scored, as our high-pressing game and slick passing left Gombe United in the dust!

This resounding win sets a new record for most goals conceded in an NPFL season (76), surpassing Nembe City's 2014 mark. What a match! What a team! 

38. Match day 38: Akwa United 3-1 Rivers United (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium PH, 23 June 2024)

Heartbreak in Uyo: Akwa United Edges Rivers United 3-1

A disappointing end to the season as Akwa United outpaced us 3-1 in Uyo. Despite a bright start, we conceded two early goals within 14 minutes. Nyima Nwagua's stunning strike in the 15th minute, set up by Alex Oyowah's brilliance, gave us hope. However, Ubong Friday's late penalty sealed the win for Akwa United.

We finish the season in 8th place with 53 points from 38 matches. On to the next chapter!
