The National Open Athletics Championship kicked off in Lagos State, showcasing top-notch performances from Nigerian athletes. Here are the highlights from Day 1:
Field Events
- Women's Discus Throw: Chioma Onyekwere Lyons retained her national title with a throw of 60.74m, ahead of Obiageri Amarachi (59.39m).
- Women's Hammer Throw: Oyesade Olatoye retained her national title with a throw of 67.50m.
- Men's Long Jump: Charles Godfrey kept his national title with a leap of 7.95m.
- High Jump: Honourable Clement won his first national title with a jump of 2.05m.
Track Events
- Men's 10,000m: Gang James won the event with a time of 30:54.50sc.
- Women's 400m: Patience Okon George clocked 51.92s to win Heat 2, while Favour Onyah (53.17s) and Deborah Oke (53.48s) won Heat 1 and Heat 3, respectively.
- Women's 100m: Prestina Ochonogor (Long Jumper) surprised with a win in Heat 1 (11.47s), while Olayinka Olajide (11.42s), Cynthia Neeke (11.48s), Maria Thompson (11.50s), and Tejiri Ugoh (11.50s) won their respective heats.
- Men's 100m: Kanyinsola Ajayi (10.07s), Israel Sunday Okon (10.03s), Enoch ElAdegoke (10.12s), Olaolu Olatunde (10.13s), Alaba Akintola (10.08s), and Seye Ogunlewe (10.18s) won their respective heats.
