The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is set to host the Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF), an intervention project designed to promote inclusivity and equal opportunities for youths in the region.
According to Alabo Boma Iyaye, Executive Director of Finance and Administration, the festival will feature 17 sports, including Para-Athletics and Para-lifting, to cater to youths with physical disabilities. This initiativealigns with global best practices in sports and promotes inclusivity.
Iyaye emphasized that sports is a powerful tool for national unity, providing a platform for youths to bond, discover their talents, and represent Nigeria in international competitions. The festival aims to regenerate the pipeline of athletes and discover new talents to replace renowned athletes like Blessing Okagbare and Victor Ikpeba.
The NDDC has traditionally focused on providing infrastructure in roads, healthcare, education, and skills acquisition. However, Iyaye noted that delving into sports will provide an alternative career path for those who may not excel in education or artisan skills.
The Niger Delta Sports Festival will take place in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, from April 1-8, featuring approximately 3000 athletes competing in 17 sports.
